PIN Entry Device Approval Listing is Now Available to Merchants and Device Suppliers

The PCI Security Standards Council has taken an important step in its mission of improving the security of personal identity number (PIN)-based transactions by issuing a list of approved PIN Entry Devices (PED) and supporting documents for device makers who want to ensure that their products meet recently developed standards. The list will also have the benefit of providing merchants and service providers with a single source of information on devices that can be used immediately.

An additional intention of the listing, published on February 11, is to make sure a level playing field exists for PED suppliers by removing conflicting requirements. PED manufacturers can now submit devices for testing based on a single set of requirements. The Council hopes that this will lead to a further proliferation of PED products.

Late last year the responsibility for PIN entry device (PED) security requirements was transferred from JCB, MasterCard International and Visa International to the industry standards body, the PCI Security Standards Council. This action was taken to better secure global PIN-based transactions, and will apply to all devices that accept PIN entry.
